TD5 Gearbox replacement

Dec 02, 2006 3 Replies

Hi All.

Can anybody recommend a replacement gearbox for a disco TD5 that will last. I do a lot of towing (2200kg+) and the first box went after 150

000km. I am now on 250 000km and wondering when the next one is going to give up. Would also like to know if anybody has found a worth conversion for the TD5 as I am looking for more power, my have to go the V8 route.

Hi all,

Just been reading through the postings and an article about someone who found that the box in his disco should have been a manual but was in fact an auto box from a V8. Are these boxes different (stronger) or is it jus the ratios that are different?

The ZF 4-speed is reckoned to be quite a tough box. later ones are better, the "A" clutch was uprated, a weak point in the earlier ones. I think the relevant numbers are 4HP22 and 4HP24, but no doubt Badger can confirm or deny.

Yep, 4HP24 has the uprated "A" clutch, amongst other internal mods. BUT - it is about 15mm longer overall than the 4HP22 because of this, and also it is electronically controlled. You can build the 24 internals into a 22 case and fit the 22's manual valve body, and the 24's larger "A" clutch and pump housing though, but it's quite a faff about. Badger.
