Octavia gearbox

Ok I know they're weak, anyway 1.9 SDi Skoda Octavia on a 51 plate, done

240,000 miles.

Middle of last week the gearbox started whining, mainly in 4th and 5th more annoying than loud. Today it started jumping out of 3rd gear and 4th became increasingly harder to get. Now theres a very loud noise (bucket of spanners) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears which goes if the clutch is depressed. Fourth is still hard to get but amazingly fifth is fine as is reverse.

Any ideas on whats wrong, easy to fix and how much? I'm guessing the selector but honestly I've no idea. I'ts definately the gearbox and not the clutch.

At that mileage, I think there may be more than 1 or 2 parts worn out/broken. A recon'd box, or one from a scrapper is going to be the cheapest option I think, even if you can DIY repair the old one. It shouldnt be too difficult getting hold of a box, they are fairly common. Alan.

originally it probably only needed a single bearing, but now the worn bearing has broken, a second-hand box from a cruncher is the way to go.

240,000 miles on a 51 plate- there has to be a Skoda joke in there!

Maybe I'm unduly kind but that doesn't sound like a weak gearbox.

My uncle drove a Lada for a while, one of those real ones, which had none of these tarty curves. Proper square man machine!! know what I mean?

He told me it was the most reliable motor he'd had.

Cold starting? You're joking, it's like an oven in here.

Do you get a letter from The Queen when you hit a quarter million?

When a gearbox starts whining it means the gears have altered their mesh - usually due to a bearing failing. I'd say you'll need a replacement box.

Up here, we've seen many Skoda Octavia's with 500k miles & still going strong

After all they're based on the VW Bora

Thanks everyone. Not sure if it's the original engine/gearbox as when I got the car it already had 120,000 miles on the clock. Had heard stories about problems with poor gearboxes and clutches on Octavias that needed replacing early and often, and that getting a scrap replacement is false economy as it will likely fail sooner than later as well, if it's not already knackerered. Guess there not that true!

I think it's the 1.6 petrol boxes that fail, A rivet breaks on the final drive assembly apparently. I think diesel ones are OK. Go to the breakers and find one that's been crashed at low miles. Don't forget that Golf/Bora/Leon and god knows what else will be a good source too.
