'OT' what does it mean please?

Being reasonably new to newsgroups like this, I keep seeing shortened words such as 'OT' etc., in headings and in written text.

Can somebody explain what these mean please?

In this context it's a flag to warn readers that the subject is Off Topic for the group, so people who only want to talk landrovers can ignore the thread.

This group has been tolerant of OT requests for help and it seems to be useful to discuss with a group you have become virtually familiar with.

OT means Off Topic - usually a request for information not strictly, or even vaguely, relvant to the group. Sometimes it's just someone who wants to get something off their chest! Some groups get very heated about OT's, but in Landy Land we're generally very tollerant - especially if it's having a go at a (un)poular traget!.

Putting OT in the subject warns thosewho don't want to read such drivell that they can ignore the post, part of Netiquette.

Off Topic, i.e., has bugger all to do with Land Rovers.

The most common ones are:

OT - Off topic ROT - Right Off Topic FS - For Sale FA - For Auction (since the advent of ebay)

Other Acronyms you are likely to see, but these will be mainly in the text, not headers:

AFAIK: As far as i know BTW: By the way IIRC: If I recall correctly IMHO: In my humble opinion LOL: Laughing out loud RTFM: Read the full manual (or something like that) SWMBO: She Who Must Be Obeyed

90% of these you'll never see here. Alex

Judging by the last page of visible threads in my newsreader about

1/3rd of our threads are off topic. Sometimes i feel surprised to see a landrover thread! :)

OP (original poster) - you might also see extensions of 'OT' such as ROT - Really Off Topic/Rule Of Tim. The Rule of Tim states that there is always atleast one expert on a given topic (often not an automotive topic) reading this group. You might also find this useful:

Not to be confused with PO, the Previous Owner (of the vehicle under discussion).

And the SPOT - stupid previous owner trick, a bodge which worked perfectly well until yesterday, but failed today when you need the truck, and which will cost 10 times the original failed part because of damage done during the bodge. Welded up core plugs, kind of thing.
