P Reg Disco Problem

No mention of oil consumption. You have been using an SHPD oil as specified have you? Assuming no undue engine wear then a faulty turbo or injectors seem to be the immediate suspects. My money is on the turbo.

Between oil changes, there is a little consumption, but not much, and certainly no changes. The Oil is Magnatec for Diesels.

Apart from Cam Belts, Oil / Filter Changes, one new battery and a water pump, no other work or service has been done. I bought the car 2 years ago, last October, and have put 110,000 on it in that time. This is mostly motorway mileage. The engine has overheated once. That was last summer on the M5, but I pulled over and let it cool down, before carrying on. The gauge never went into the Red, by the way.

Sounds about par for the course for (even a well-maintained) 175K miles! Sounds like it's due for an overhaul sometime in the near future - it really just depends on how bad you want to let it get before you do that. It'll probably get to 200K, just gradually getting worse. What you do then is a balancing act between cost of overhaul/exchange engine and the value of the vehicle.

Overhaul could mean just injectors and cylinder head, or it could be a full engine-out strip down (in which case an exchange engine might be cheaper). Take advice on that nearer the time - preferably not from the guy you might ask to do the work!

Don't bother overhauling it if it isn't significantly worn. Take it to someone who can diagnose the fault, which is probably relatively trivial such as injectors or turbo, and get it fixed. It may have another 100,000 miles or more left in it before it needs an overhaul.

Hi Adrian,

I have had exactly this problem on a Disco. Had a slight overheat and then the same symptoms you suggest. In the end it was the turbo.

So get the turbo checked - not cheap at 500 pounds (UK) to replace but worthwhile.
