Son (aged 17) has just passed his driving test and wants to insure a 1.1 litre motor. The best quote I've found so far is £1173 TPFT with a £250 excess ........
...... anybody got any favourite insurers for newly qualified young drivers please?
Max Power and other such young driver magazines often have specialist firms in the back. ISTR Adrian Flux are quite good.....of course plan B is for you to insure it and name him as a driver....
...and Neil Brownlee spake unto the tribes of Usenet, saying...
... as long as he won't be the main driver. If you insure it yourself with him named on your policy, when in fact it is his car and he is the main/only driver (which is what I understand from the OP), then you will be committing fraud. The honesty or otherwise of that approach is up to you, but may well form the basis of an unpaid claim if you are found out, and his prosecution for driving an uninsured vehicle and/or possibly fraud.
If he takes a pass plus,He will get a discount from certain insurance companies who are with this scheme. To be honest,That quote you have is not that bad if it's for the year and considering his age and inexperience. My son has just turned 19,He has been driving since he was 17,He has done the pass plus. And is driving a 1200 clio for £600 a year tpft with Finsure.

according to the adverts, Admiral love younger drivers.....
Problem is all insurance companies see a 17 yr old driving a car full of his mates with the stereo as loud as it can go. They just use it as an excuse to f*ck you over. Have heard stories of new drivers in cars worth about £50 being charged over £1k just for TPFT.... makes you understand why some of them dont bother...... Why not start sensible then start loading the premium after the first couple of whacks, at least that way they will be able to afford insurance!
Im with Adrian Flux and tried to get my lad on my insurance before he passed his test,Just to save him a few bob on lessons. They wont entertain learners or anyone under the age of 21.

Daughter aged 17 with Ford Ka 1.3, fully comp in her name was £712 with Diamond, now 18 and pased test six months ago has a Pug 206 1.4 fully comp is £645 again with Diamond.
Its a new law out now,If you have just passed your test then you only get 2 chances.I believe they are called section 7 or something. Get 2 of these and you are off the road for a year. In a way its a good idea,But why give it to new drivers?.Surely it should apply to all. And you are so right about the stereo up loud.I wont go in the car with my son. Firstly i cant stand garage.hip-hop or rap. Secondly,His stereo is that powerful my nostrils vibrate!!.Im serious.
My daughter passed last September. I spent an age hunting the best deals for her 1.2L 1995 Corsa, best I found was, believe it or not Tesco, about £700 TPFT with a sensible excess.
Bob, try 'confused.com', no company is going to be very cheap for a newbie on the road, but at least 'confused' will give up to twenty or more quotes ( or refusals) .
Just for a laugh, I sent for a quote for my daughter (19 at the time) to be sole driver of my 3.9 disco - +AKM-10,960 fully comp, stopped reading before getting to the 'excess' part. Eventually went with Tesco, on a 'p' plate 1.3 fiesta (+AKM-1125.00 fully comp with pass plus.
My lads 50cc Aprilia quoted at +AKM-1250 with Bennetts fully comp, down to
+AKM-285 TPFT.
All the best
Lofty
