Poll: what should go into unused dash space

Mar 21, 2007 16 Replies

Hi all,

Got a space in my dash on the 110 (opposite end to the speedo, where the voltmeter usually goes). What would be the best thing to put there?

Clock

Voltmeter

Oil temp guage

Oil pressure guage

Engine is 2.25 diesel. A friend once insisted that the oil pressure needs watching carefully on these engines, but I don't really know.

Stuart

How about:

MRC8225 Instrument Panel Blank - Defender to WA159806 £1.62 inc VAT

Cheers Richard

i think that the oil pressure is the most usful thing out of all those

4!

If you have an oil pressure warning lamp then if it goes out you do not worry but if you have an oil pressure guage then you'll get paranoid if you think the pressure is dropping (even slightly) so fit a clock, you don't want to be late for various appointments or the school run etc. :-)

Martin

I am never late, I arrive precisely when I mean to. :)

I agree up to a point, but at speed on the road, by the time the oil light comes on the engine's already shagged, if it's something like an unexpected oil leak, say, whereas the gauge will give more warning.

No, I've got one of those thanks. Would you do a p/x on an oil pressure guage?

Stuart

Wot, even wivvout a clock? It's never sunny round here when you want it to be, and my gnomon is loose and only accurate to 15 seconds. :-)

Martin

Nah, you're thinking about the old 1256cc Vauxhall Vivas with the cast iron crank, the earlier 1159ccs would run for half an hour with no oil in. :-)

Martin

You can get treatment for that, now.

(Lovely word, gnomon.)

I feel vaguely educated after looking up what a gnomon is ;)

Though this particular definition made my head hurt a bit:

"The geometric figure that remains after a parallelogram has been removed from a similar but larger parallelogram with which it shares a corner."

I'm just disappointed that no-one's asked "What's a gnomon?" as I've been waiting to say "Two bob a week after tax".

I guess I'll just have to give up and return to my duckweigh.

It was dropping a valve that killed my 1256 viva. Ungrateful bloody thing, I'd not long rebuilt the engine, either.

Never had that trouble at all and they used to get some welly, both HA vans,

1256cc engines with 1159cc crank and rods in, no bother at all 4 yrs running out of one and 4 1/2 yrs from the other. I had lots of spare engine bits and people were always coming scrounging those pressed steel rockers as the pushrods wore through them but I never had any trouble, it must have been the crap oil they were using.

Martin

What's a ... oh, hang on :)

Stuart

Drat and double drat!!!
