Finally turned out to be a dodgy main earth. Took it and it's connectors off, applied a bench grinder polish wheel to the connectors, remade the connections and soldered them, polished all the faces, re-assembled it all and covered with vaseline, and all is now well! Just goes to show you shouldn't necessarily believe your eyes....
