Re-powering a Disco 1 4.0L =>TD5

I'd like to know if anyone on this NG has re-powered a Disco Series 1 from 4.0L to a TD5? If so, how difficult was it?

Mine has the R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer case.

Are Td5's common in your part of the world?

In the UK they are very common and there are many specialists that have gained the knowledge that is crucial to getting the Td5 running and running right in another vehicle. Even so it is not a common conversions as there are so many Disco II available to buy.

It is not a financially viable conversion and would be done as a labour of love.

Fitting a Tdi would be much much simpler and give you better economy.

Good luck

What are the major differences between the two? Secondly, what's the cost (roughly) for each?

Problem is that here in the Colonies, LRNA decided that no one wanted a TD5/TDi without asking first. We will now be getting our first diesel LR, a LR3 sometime late this year. Of course at an inflated price because they're considered "luxury" vehicles over here.

I bought mine when I was stationed in Germany in '97. My insurance carrier classifies the beast as a truck (lorry) which cuts my rates.

I guess you are in the US? I believe the decision not to export the diesel was to do with US emissions being very strict on diesel engines, rather than their not being a market (which there probably wasn't anyway given the cost of fuel over there!)

The TD5 is totally dependant on and engine management system pretty much the same idea as your current V8. And as such will have most of the faults that a diesel engine of old could never have.

Importing such a complicated engine / management system into the US where they have no knowledge or diagnostics would be a major problem. It is unlikely that they could even get it to run.

Most Tdis have very little electronics and no diagnostics and would be a much easier conversion. They are more fuel efficient as well.

You will need a gearbox too in order to do a proper job.

Personally I would say that it is not an option either way.

The LR3 is considered luxury here too and I bet you can buy them cheaper than we can !!! Current UK list price for the top spec Tdv6 is 43,495 all inc or 76,000 US Dollars.
