Re: Will Billing be as good

Tatton Park was a nice place when I visited a few years ago for the

1000 engine rally (I'm in to stationary engines too) but if I were organising something I would have thought somewhere more central to the country would get a better attendance, somewhere off the M1 or M62 perhaps?. Or maybe Pickering showground, they manage to hold one of the biggest and most successfull steam and vintage rallies in the country there in August so it must be a viable location and now has a reasonable exhibition hall too. Well, there is no choice. "The Show at Kelmarsh is cancelled It would appear that the majority of trade stands who have booked for a July show have chosen to go to Billing and we can't run a show with only a 1/3 of stands that we normally get.

Refunds for those who have already booked for the camping or trade will be processed shortly."

It wasn't hard to see coming, only the clubs were fully supporting them and I assume they don't contribute much to the income as they must get in cheaply. Inevitably the big traders made the choice. Greg

It will be interesting to see if the new organisers can make a better job of what will still be known as the Billing Show. Might have a trundle along myself for the day.

I bet they think they can. I doubt it, myself. LRE wouldn't have walked if the problems were easily solved.

Either that or they felt there was more dosh to be made at the new site

- being able to charge for entry is a good start in that direction.

It's speculation but I would have thought profit was the sole driving force behind the move, the magazine industry has become notorious for short term money grabbing. It's a great shame that all these events seem to be organised by magazines not enthusiasts. Greg

yeah, but LRE is one of the few magazines published by enthusiasts, or so I understand it.

But practically every hobby magazine employs enthusiasts, they work cheap 'cos they are enthusiasts). If the head bean counter was putting his enthusiasm above his wallet I would be very surprised 8-). Greg

didn't mean that - quite a few of the magazines these days are run by Emap or similar large umbrealla organisations, even if the conrtibutors are enthusiasts working on the cheap.

I'm not sure about the enthusiast working on the cheap (except maybe LRM). The little CV's when someone joins a mag are always enlightening. One of the mags, I can't remember which one, when launched proudly announced that they were all enthusiasts, yet only one member of staff, the press girl, had actually owned a Land Rover! I think they are just jobbing writers who will be amazingly enthusiastic about any marque that puts money in the bank - nothing wrong with that though, there's not many who trully believe in their job.

And I thought I was cynical 8-), yes obviously some are but in the other hobbies I'm involved in they are definitely mostly enthusiasts happy to be offered some scraps for writing about their interests, you meet them at shows so see them involved in the hobbies, many of them like the little bit of attention they get because of their writing but nowt wrong with that.
