According to the reports on the bbc web article thingy, he was in a "buggy" being driven by Matt Lee, which crashed into a fence. They were in a field adjacent to the M1, not actually on the motorway, according to the article I read.
R.I.P. indeed, my thoughts to his family.

I first met David many years ago when the business at Thornton Rd was not long started. I called for some small parts which I could carry easily on my old Norton (which I still have). David was very interested in the bike and said he had one the same but I have never had the chance to see and appreciate his. I am deeply saddened by this news, commiserations to his family, a real nice bloke.

but better than vegetable-in-hospital bed, in my book.
I met someone who had a stroke in his brain stem some years ago, ended up with locked-in syndrome, perfectly functional brain but can only move his eyes up and down, everything else is paralysed. Just after he'd gotten married and had his first kid too.
