My rangee has been standing about a month with no gear box fitted, fitted the box this weekend, Bloody clutch will not release the plate, tried running until the engine was hot continually pressing the clutch, tried putting it to 4 and turning the engine over, just keeps moving forward.
any suggestions other than taking the box back out and replacing the plate?

Make a hole in the flat part of the underside of the bellhousing. Position the clutch in that way you can pry the disc loose with a king-size screwdriver. Cut a piece of metal big enough to cover the hole, find 4 selftappers, drill 4 holes in the piece of metal to match the screws and do the same in the bellhousing. Apply instant-gasket, put piece of metal and screws in place. Done.

The other method is to take it down a nice, quiet, straight bit of road with a few revs in a low gear then dump the clutch and brake *very* hard. Just remember, changing gear (esp into reverse) will be difficult so the quieter the road and the closer to home the better!
Having said all that, try what you were doing with the handbrake on, chocked wheels and footbrake applied when you turn it over and either the clutch will release or the starter pinion will disintegrate ... the vehicle should not move forward!
