How can you tell if your TDi 2.5 diesel engine is a series 200 or 300 ?

Generally by looking at the rocker cover on top of the engine - if its metal it's a 200 and if its got a black plastic cover it's a 300.
Problem is that the black plastic/elastic cover of the 300Tdi can also be fitted to the 200Tdi.
The most positive way is the check whether the engine is fitted with a single serpentive belt for the ancillaries or with a twin (or triple if the car is fitted with air condition) belts setup for them.

Look at the angle of the injector clamps, 90 degree to the crank 300TDi, angled 200TDi
