series 3 stearing problems

hello i have a problem with my 1974 series 3 and would like some advice on where to start looking to fix the problem. first of all I engaged 4wd to circulate the oil as havent been in 4wd for awhile when i went a very short distance and the drivers side wheel locked solid i put in reverse to take tention off and disengaged the freewheeling hubs (selectro) and back to 2 wd again and thought thats not good i went on my way home again everything was normal till i went to turn left i couldnt go past centre on the steering wheel while going right was normal. could there be some damage internaly to the freewheeling hub thats not allowing me to turn or do i start to look at the steering box seems strange that the right turn is normal but left turn past centre is a no go . anyway any help on the subject would be of great help.

i am newbie to landrovers and dont know much about them or where to start looking for this problem

thanks Brett

Assuming nothing is visibly wrong with the steering it is possible that one of the front half-shaft universal joints has fallen to bits, and one of the cups had ended up in the bottom of the swivel preventing it moving in one direction.

This is the most likely cause of your problem. You can confirm this by jacking up the driver's wheel and splitting the tie rod end, and checking that the problem is stopping the steering on that wheel from turning. Parts will not be very expensive, but it is a bit of work, although no special tools are needed except a hub nut spanner. I suggest you get a workshop manual! JD

It's not a hard job - the hub and stub axle need to come off - but it is a bit time consuming. The Haynes manual is perfectly adequate to guide you through the job. You'll need

1 off 231505 drive flange gasket 1 off 500978 stub axle gasket 1 off 217353 hub nut tab washer (the old one may be able to be re-used) 1 off PS608101L split pin (you really should use a new one, but..) 1 off RT3515 felt washer (maybe, depends on the state of the old one) 3 off 277311 tab washers (for the back plate bolts) 1 off RTC3516 O ring (if its a 109)

if the hub is difficult to get off the stub axle, or the inner and/or outer hub seals look like they may be leaking then 1 or 2 off RTC3510 Hub Seal I think thats everything!! It might sound a lot, but you should get change from a tenner.

Oh, I think the Haynes book goes on about disconnecting the brakes, you don't need to do that, carefully manouver the back plate complete with brakes over the stub axle and park it out of the way, remembering not to put straing on the flexi pipe.
