Series 3 temperature sender - different types?

I recently replaced the temp sender on my 1980 2.25 109, as it was reading high (just touching red) on the guage. The result: an even higher reading.

Checking the Hanes, there's a note about late S3s needing the type with beige insulation, not the black or white types. Sure enough, my new one has white insulation. Checking with the supplier I bought from, they say only one type is available, and "Hanes manuals are often wrong."

I'm more inclined to believe Hanes than the (perfectly charming) telesales people, but can't source the correct part. Can anyone shed any light?

(I should add, I dont think the engine is actually running hot.)

You should have a 560794, if that helps

You are sure it's not a fault with the voltage regulator ...

Intermotor book only lists one type for everything up to the end of SIII bar for the V8 - mind, that's wrong 'cos the early ones had one of those triangular things with 3 little screws, not a screw-in one at all... It does however list a different one for the 2.25 defenders, which has the same thread, so I assume the difference is in the resistance value.

My HBOL also says "beige". I suggest a visit to the LR dealer, unless Paddock list 'em... not in the on-line shop.

Or even just a bad connection behind the dash panel? Does your fuel gauge read accurately? If not I bet it's those connections on those studs behind the dash panel again. Clean up ( don't remove the knurled nuts completely or you will drop them never to be seen again) and with a sparing dash of Vaseline smeared on them, tighten and retry your temp/fuel gauge. I tried lots of things before I found it was the easiest and simplest job that cured it, not had a problem since.

Hmm, I'll investigate. Wouldn't the a faulty voltage regulator also mess up the fuel guage (which is fine) ?

Thanks all.

Yes. (So it's not that then ;-))

I have a brown felt tip pen thats almost dried up if it helps.

Also looking for an alternative sender for the 101.

Also tried adding a voltage regulator which didn't help. Next effort is to wire in a variable resistor to get the guage to read half at normal and red when hot.

I've already checked it with a maplin digital thermo an it ain't running hot....but 100 miles on melted the sensor on the maplins thingy....should have read the instructions only rated to 40 degrees for the sensor....whooops!

you tried the LR V8 one?

I had the same on my V8 - the car ones have different resistance, it seems. Replaced it with one intended for the 110 V8 and it's fine. Quite likely to be the same temp gauge on the 101.

I have just bought a new temperature sensor for my Series 3 (it didn't read at all). I now have the same problem of it reading in the red! I will try your tips and report back. I just wondered if anyone out there knows where those knurled nuts go??!! The square nut i was forced to replace on with to get my speedo back on just isn't the same!!
