series 3 troubles

G'day.



i've got a series 3 with the 6 cylinder rover, and i'm getting some rather odd symptoms. the motor is in excellent condition, done well under 100,000 ks, runs beautifully with no smoke etc. but occasionally, generally in cold weather, it will start running like a dog for a coupl of minutes, then jump back to normal. when it happens, it wont rev past about 3,000 (no tacho, but thats my guesss) and feels like the timing is way way out. my suspicions are either a sticking vacuum advance, or the carby float level is not working properly. either flooding it or running it too lean. any other suggestions?? doesn't stop the car from running, just very annoying when it happens up a hill and you can't get it past 30ks an hour.

Have you changed the fuel filter recently? Sounds a bit like fuel starvation at this distance.

mmm, possible. but some blockage in the fuel lines seem like the most propable to me. as a stuffed diaphragm would probably cause it to run badly all the time wouldn't it??

Some recent developments.

problem got worse today and ended up dying completely on me. i managed to crawl home in first gear annoying the hell out of those behind me, but hey, im allowed to in a landrover, right?

anway, got it home and checked fuel supply. as i didn't have a helper, about a litre of fuel gushed out of the pipe when i flicked the switch, so the problem isn't with the fuel supply. had a look at the dia-bloody-fragem, looks OK. i chucked one of my old volvo strombergs on it, fired up all right and was running pretty rough, but better than with the landy one. i reckon it would run very rough as it's tuned for a twin-setup on a volvo and has been sitting on the shelf for about a year. so i'm thinking the problem must be with the carb somewhere. i'll pull it apart and chuck a kit through it and see whether that improves the situation.
