series axleadvice wanted-----please!

hiya guys,

ive got a 109 front axle fitted to my series3 swb. 24 spline drive members.

destroyed the cv joint the other day, "no probs " i thought , as ive got loadsa spares at home.

yeah , there all 10 spline drive members.

so ive changed the bearing in the rear of the chrome swivel and put the ten spline in. no probs except im getting hypoid oil coming out from the wheel bearings,

is this normal, as before i had one shot in and there wasnt any leaks from the wheel bearing.

also, will the oil seal at the end of the axle case be ok, bearing in mind the axle casing`s a 109 and the short drive shaft is a swb one.

someones told me the axle casings are different.

should i worry about the oil coming out,? and what should stop it leaking.

please help as i wont be able to sleep tonight worrying about this. ill have to stop in the pub till the early hours trying to think it all thru,

andy

Struggling with my alcohol accelerated alzheimer's ......

If the series axle had a CV joint rather than a UJ then it came out of a Stage 1 V8 version of the Series 3 rather than a straightforward 109. These are happy with the grease, whereas the UJ type ones require EP90 in lieu - you sure you have CVs rather than UJs??

Having said that....

If it is just the wheel bearings that are leaking (lots of EP90 all over the inside of the road wheel??) then the chances are that removing the hub has just disturbed the old seal and you need to fit a new one, you may also want to fit a new stub axle collar as they can develop a groove where the oil seal fits.

The front SWB and LWB axle casings are the same - bearings are the same too so no worries there - the ten and 24 spline jobs only really differ in the drive flange bit
