Series cold start warning light switch

Can anybody tell me how I can test what I believe to be the cold start warning light switch located next to the thermostat of my series IIA.

I have purchased a new switch, and before fitting placed in the freezer for 2 hours and measured continuity. The switch seems permantly open circuit. The supplier replaced the switch but the second one shows the same symptoms.

I think I must be missing something. Appreciate any thoughts?

The switch is open curcuit until it gets to engine running temperature.

The switch goes in series with the switch on the choke cable, so the light only iluminates if the engine is up to temperature, and you have forgoten to push the choke in

actually... if I get around to re-instating the over-run fuel cutoff[1] then it could come in handy - said item in its original installation (ford 2.8i K-jet system) had an inhibitor to stop it doing so when the engine was cold.

needs a "throttle closed" switch inventing for it first though. A suitably-sealed microswitch ought to work. The ford has a contact on the throttle body.

fuel cut-off would be handy, it'd increase the engine braking, which would help on an auto.

[1] neat gadget - it's a speed-sensitive relay which cuts off the fuel when the revs go over 1700 with the throttle shut, and then cuts it back in again if the revs drop below 1400. If you pull it apart, you can adjust it to suit a 4-cylinder (originally 6) and, I daresay, by turning it the other way, an 8.

when it was cold but now having tried it in boiling water the new switch works fine.

Yes, it is supposed to be open circuit until the engine is hot.
