Series III not starting

On or around Sat, 19 May 2007 09:32:18 +1200, EMB enlightened us thusly:

I think he means the middle panel that the grille screws to. The headlamp earths land on a screw in the top of that, in front of the radiator, on Edward II, which means that if the panel is not earthing to the chassis it wouldn't work.

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more specific. I didnt mean to imply that I was seeking ground through a plastic grill. I have solved the headlight, blinker and driving light issue for the most part. Everything works. A few abnormalities...Right blinker very slow, left headlight and driving light dim...but everything works in the front.

I have reworked the ground from the battery to block and block to chassis. Thia appears to be >>> I since gone through and cleaned and sanded my ground contact from the

Non-stainless, non-conductive such as plastic or similar I would suggest.

The important thing is too keep the water out of the interface that's what does the damage by providing an electrolyte. Bone dry, you'd be OK.

Fill the joint with Waxoyl (or Vaseline for electrical connections).

Yes, stainless reacts horribly with aluminium.

Steve

You're welcome. It's good to know it's an easy fix.

Still might not be the solenoid, you need to short the large terminal on the solenoid from the battery supply to the small solenoid actuation terminal. You are only proving the motor not the solenoid by shorting out the two large terminals.

Martin

shhhh... i know. But I'm far too tired to bother explaining right now. I'd be really grateful if you would Martin.

I have tremendous gratitude for what you guys are doing. I would be at a complete loss without your help. So at this point I've proven that ground negative works properly and that the starter is operating. So if I understand you correctly I need to short between the large battery side terminal to one or both of the the small terminal projecting from the front. I only have wires on on of the front side terminals so it makes sense that that is the terminal I need to touch. IS that correct? Am I expecting the starter to turn again? and if not is it the solinoid?

Mart>> Still might not be the solenoid, you need to short the large terminal on the

Yes that's correct, and yes, the starter should turn again. If not, it's probably the solenoid but I'm still trying to decide why it's got *two* small terminals, the other is usually fitted to feed ignition supply across a ballast resistor on a petrol(gasoline) motor. Sometimes these can be the earth end of the solenoid coil connected to an alternator output to override the starter switch to prevent damage when the engine is already running (but that's another story)

Martin

I hope that sorts it then you can get some sleep. :-)

M

Yes, yes and yes.

The sentiment is much appreciated but the chances of me getting to Chicago in the near future are basically nil.

Oh I dunno, only today I just had a young man in asking to buy a Series 2 Landrover, said he loves 'em, and he said he was from Chicago. Small world 'innit, so if I get up that way I'll test one for EMB as well. :-)

Somehow I don't think there's much chance for me either :-(

Martin

Isn't Chicago rather full of Sepos anyway? (Yanks to you Poms)

Who gives a s**t if they're buying the beer? :-)

Martin

They probably microwave it anyway, to make it nice & warm for you Poms :)

I can take it, it comes out warm when I've done with it, better than that weasel p**s they sell in Oz :-)

Martin

Nah, you're wrong, utterly wrong. Oz beer is made from drop bear p**s. Mind you, I can't vouch for it as I've never tried it. Anyone round here that wants a favour from me comes bearing a bottle of Bailey's :)
