Shear force of HT Steel?

Anyone know what the shear force of a HT M10 bolt is? or a way to calculate said.

Without knowing what grade of bolt it is somewhat hard to calculate.

However as a guide I can give you approximate shear figures for a 3/8" diameter bolt.

Grade 5 8,000lbs Grade 8 10,000lbs

Good enough. I have 4 bolts in shear to support each wheel station on a demountable towing apparatus. Since the maximum anticipated load will be under no more than 1500kg, even allowing for dynamic load it should be sufficient.

I presume the Grades you quote are SAE? IIRC the bolts being supplied are ISO 8.8 steel.(equiv SAE 5) Although 10.9 (SAE 8) (or even 12.9) would obviously be stronger I suspect that obtaining specific M10 x

170mm bolts in these grades would be difficult.

My trailer has each stub axle attached by 4 grade 5 3/8" UNF bolts - they are part of a commercially available kit that has a 1500kg rating per axle so you should be ok.

Yes those were SAE grades, so 8.8 should be fine.

Should be stamped or moulded/forged on the head if it's not it ain't HT!
