It doesn't matter, we need a new approach because the beards in orange anoraks have won the 'keep the countryside beautiful, destroy all motor vehicles' argument.
How about:
"How dare you deny the beauty of the fells to the disabled?"

How can it be beautiful when its littered with bearded anoraks?

Quite, but if one of those ramblers gets ill how on earth are they going to be rescued? I trust the rescue guys in their 4x4s will now refuse to help, "sorry it's illegal for us to drive there". As a walker and nature lover myself I would like to rid the countryside of Ramblers. You can usually hear them coming for half a mile, chattering away, even shouting to each other, frightening all the wildlife for miles around.
4x4s don't do that, it's strange but usually wildlife don't consider a vehicle a threat, until a human gets out! I also know which are the most courteous of the two.- Vote on answer

Strange that this has re-surfaced as Walna Scar has been closed to
4x4's for about 4 years since the NERC bill was passed, I was fortunate to drive it just before and it is awesome- Vote on answer

Don't be silly.
That's just sophistry.
The police just give you permission.
I often find that walkers don't mind tatty Defenders, but if you go past in something shiny you get shouted at.

Presumably in their eyes:
Tatty defender = person working the land/tending stock. Something shiny = townie out for a jolly.

IIRC from the Radio Cumbria news reports last week it was opened in the fairly recent past (less than a year) but the walkers have jumped up and down on people further up the governmental chain and it's been closed again.

Well they're obviously not rational, they walk about the English countryside expecting decent weather...

I say yes, like everyone else I enjoy the countryside and as I choose to view it from my RRC that's my choice. Walkers should be allowed to enjoy it how they choose as well, but not at the expense of other users. Many a time I have been shouted at abused because of my choice but I allow them to pass with a smile. I smile all the more as the rain clouds roll in and the gentle rain turns into a storm.
So please can they just have some thought for us in our poor 4x4's
