Starter issues revisited. Please help.

Hello:

'96 Discovery 4.0L, auto box, NAS

Battery installed and uprated to a yellow top Optima in spring of 2006. Starter installed and uprated to a Mean Green fall of 2006.

The following has been a gremlin since before the various installations. I turn the key to the on position and wait for the relays to stop clicking then I attempt to start the rover to my chagrin the starter spins and the bendix gear does not fire. This is very dodgy to say the least. So, I replaced the battery it was time anyhow. Gremlin went away for a few weeks. Then it started again. I replaced the starter (over 110,000 mi. through and through). It worked wonderfully for a few weeks and now cropped up again big time.

I have attempted to start the vehicle by jumping the terminals on starter [using the appropriate tool of course] thinking that a relay may have been stuck somewhere. No luck. Are there any relay that need testing? I have jumped the car with mixed results.

I'm thinking poor/corroded wiring and am considering replacing the positive and negative cables to the body, starter and the under hood fuse box. What are your thoughts?

Email is a dead end, please use this forum for response. Thanks in advance.

faulty earth, run a jump-lead from the neg of the battery to the engine, see if that starts it up.

Isn't the bendix centrifugal? Sometimes they get sticky.

I thought they were pre-engaged on the Disco? I know mine is....

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm going to replace the earth from the engine block to the starter and such. I've replaced the terminals to a military clamp. I'll find a welding supply shoppe to purchase 00 cable, solder in new copper connections and go from there.

In news:Me6dnUc7k-PoTFTYnZ2dnUVZ snipped-for-privacy@comcast.com, Jack wibbled :

Check it first with a jumper lead straight from battery terminal to block, or starter body. If that doesn't fix it you would've wasted all the effort making up the cable. It might still be an iffy starter solenoid.
