OK, so the user handbook for my Defender TD5 says change the auxillary belt at 96000 miles but only shows pics of the 300Tdi and the V8.
What is the best way to change the belt? Where is the tensioner?

Unless its broke why fixit.
Tensioner is at left front of motor under and to the right of the alternator.
However if you need to replace it you will need to:
1)remove fan, u will need a 36mm spanner and a screwdriver to lock pulley. 2)remove belt to do this you need to take the tension off the tensioner 15mm long spanner or socket to get the leverage. 3)remove old tensioner with 14mm thin wall socket, there is only the 1 bolt holds it thru the pivot point. It takes about 30mins to do the first time, really quite simple.
If you have done 96k you can expect to replace alternator very shortly, mine bearings fail routinely at 100k

Thanks Kerry.
Probably won't fixit now but useful to know where the tensioner is on a dark night out here in the mountains.
