Use the M6 Toll, yes but don't have a puncture!

I have a question regarding the toll road. I am not trying to be 'bolshy' I just wondered why pay to use a toll road? We already pay road tax which is used for public transport, we pay ridiculous prices for fuel. A large part of that being tax. If you went into a resteraunt would you pay extra for using the toilets, or for having a waiter etc? As I said I am not being bolshy but I am curious as to why we should pay once again to use our roads? BTW my spare is on the back as it is a disco.

The M6 toll was built by a private company, hence they charge to use it. It's not "our" road, it's theirs. The rationale is, you don't *have* to use it, you can use the M6 instead if you want to. But they're providing a value add service which they charge for. You may choose not to agree with this approach.

The analogy might be, you can go to Glastonbury and use the standard loos. But, somebody could offer a deluxe loo for £5 a visit. You're not forced to use it, but you may well choose to do so, particularly when the on-site ones are overflowing and there are big queues.

I should add the obvious conclusion that it wouldn't take long for Michael Eavis to realise that he could save a lot of time and money providing good toilets, by economising down to the bare minimum and letting the private sector take up the strain. Particularly if he could then back-charge them for the ground rental.

The other thing is, as a "private road" it could be that insurance companies do not have to pay out because they are "private"

I think they already thought of that one. From the point of view of road laws, it's a public road. So speed limits, etc, still apply.

So if there's a pile-up, and the police have to sort it all out, do the road owners pay the police to, er, police their road? I suspect not.

There has to be potential for entrepreneurship here. If you owned a bit of land which could be used as a ratrun or shortcut, you could build a bit of road on it and charge people 10p to use it (or a pound a week, say, to commuters). Could be quite lucrative.

survey map? I was unaware the toll road was private and as you say no-one is forcing us to use it. I just wonder though is the Gov watching and thinking, they have tried before? Personally I would rather add hours to my journey before paying a toll. Now then back to the land idea.....

Hmm, if my range rover came up £5 i wonder if I lowered the suspension to access mode, it would then drop back down to £2 ;-)

I feel an experiment coming on when I use that toll road ;-).

Which makes me think, does the Dartford crossing suffer the same problem?

The "spare" on my car is in the boot as was on the last RR I had. The LR I had was the back door.

What would make the toll road more appealing was if there were no speed limits :) Although I think the fast car drivers would complain if I overtook them at about 95mph in a MAN 7.5t crane :)

Don't even think of mentioning stopping distances!
