V8 carb balancing

Jul 11, 2003 4 Replies

I need to balance (or at least check the balance) of the carbs on my '86 V8 RR. I've got a twin gauge vacuumometer (or whatever it's called) but no instructions for use. I'd rather not just resort to sticking the gauge tubes into each ear and listening to the hiss of the carbs so does anyone have any idea of the procedure? Also how do I adjust the carbs if required? There isn't an adjuster on the bottom of the chambers - the Haynes bumper book of jokes talks about a special twiddling tool that gets put into the top of the damper pot on this type of carb but that's it, no alternatives or work-arounds.

The idle is also a bit high (1100 rpm or so) when warmed up (it's lumpy low, about 450 rpm, when cold with no choke and about right , 750 rpm or so, when the temp gauge starts to move). It might be associated with the balance so I thought it best to start there.

TIA, Steve

IIRC last time I had to do the job I made a twiddling tool (like the name) by welding an old slot head bolt to the end of a rusty hex key. (or something like that....) I think the tool is really just a slot type head on a long thin stem. But I'm only working from very bad memory here.

If we're talking Stroms then the tool is, for the want of a better description, a 'slot head' tube with an allen key down the middle. The tube 'teeth' engage in slots on the adjuster nut. If you don't use it you stand a good chance of ripping the diaphragm.

alternatives or

So is the tube/slot-head tool the lock nut and the allen key the adjuster, or is it the other way around (before I go and rip the diaphragm)?

As I remember the tube is for the nut, the allen is for the adjuster ...
