Simple question but one that I think will have a multitude of answers.
I like the fact that nine out of ten times you can get good advice and technical help from people.

I can sit in board meetings ostensibly taking minutes, whilst actually doing Land Rover stuff...
I can meet like-minded people with similar interests whilst appearing to watch TV with Mandy...
There's some really good information available on here. And even better, the handful of people from here I have met in person have been just as nice in the flesh as on the screen.

i have really enjoyed listening to i think it's tim hobbs, mother, and a couple of other 101 drivers, constantly informing us of the problems they've had with the beasts. very few cars insight such passion and devotion and i love hearing about everyones vehicles and the slightly more than mechanical way people speak about them, like they are more than just a pile of bolts, cross-members and leaf-springs. it's tricky to exactly articulate what i'm trying to say, but hopefully you get my point.
Usenet per se, but especially a.f.l seems to have avoided much of the packaging seen in other areas of the internet - probably because it's still text based and therefore achieves a greater sense of personal interaction.
I reckon a.f.l works of different levels. Sure, there's a wealth of understanding and experience in all things technical and mechanical, but it also goes further into the area of general enthusiasm - being chatty and something akin to a local community centre.
I always think it's frightfully odd meeting up with 'names' at events. Having met well over 20 of the a.f.l regulars over the years I can honestly say that I've always been pleasantly surprised.
In reality there are probably a number of people with whom one may not choose to spend time 'in real life', but usenet achieves that sense of affininty, regardless of personal, political or religious interests, united in mud and oil, all sharing the same disaproving looks from the neighbours, all striving to keep the rotting heaps of crap on (and off) the road, all happy to slag them off but at the end of the day, all sat with a sort of smug self-satisfied look on our faces. We have a Landie and therefore, we are 'whole'. :-)

I work for an ISP - and it is one of the few sane corners of the internet I have found! Hard to describe but I'm sure you know what I mean.
That and you all know more about the oily bits of Land Rovers than can possibly be healthy!

Well, I like the fact that, as a relative newcomer, everyone's been friendly, helpful and fun. Couldn't ask for more.
And the signal-to-noise ratio of this group is one of the best I've come across.
Regards to all,
Simonm.
PS: got the 110 back yesterday - transmission feels like new - thanks Three Shires! Now got to do something about the 'drug dealer' look of the thing...
Regards,
Simonm.

I reckon this group's like a British pub - the atmosphere's generally friendly, the chat is almost always good and you can people-watch to your heart's content. There's a couple of good-looking women who hang around the bar. There's even a couple of guys in the corner alweays starting a scrap.
And the car-park is awesome!

Ah, you want to be an organ donor eh?
Oh I already am. I came home last night with two axles in the boot and a request for £300 to buy a V8 adaptor plate, SU carbs, overdrive, rangie gearbox and S2 gearbox. The pain is wearing off, but I won't be riding a horse for a while.
