What's the attraction of 101's?

Against: To hot to drive in the summer - great big hot V8 lump Thirsty Lack of space in cab and uncomfortable for the larger driver Access to Engine Top heavy Wouldn't like to have a crash in one - I've seen many crashed and not many front occupants survived Sounds fast, but it isn't

For: Sounds nice Tows Guns well Plenty of space/payload in rear

So, to summarise. If you need to tow a gun and carry ammunition it's ideal - maybe that's the reason the Army bought them!!!

I believe that there are many vehicles on the road that have an 'exclusive' following. Just wish the owners wouldn't make that an excuse for saying the vehicle is great. Look at Roll Royce, for many, many years many people quoted them as "the best car in the world". We all know now this was never true.

Agree with almost everything Tim. I'm only 5' 7" and found it very uncomfortable on a 900 mile drive (stopping every 2 hours)

Sounds about right to me. I sort of claimed the Discovery after the fuel pump packed in on the RR one evening. We'd have a 101 if we had somewhere to put it.

So do you need to be shorter than 5'7" then for it to be any where near comfortable?

I'm 6'3 ish, and i find my 101 comfier than a lot of other vehicles that ive driven. I like the upright driving position, and my head not hitting the roof is a major plus in my eyes. The vinyl seats make it a bit sweaty, but i woulnt say uncomfortable!.

I removed one of my gateposts a week or so after bringing the 101 here :). My arms couldnt take the amount of steering it needed to get round it!. I actually hit it with the 101 once, when reversing in in the dark (im going to fit some reversing lights under the sides at somepoint). I didnt even know id hit it until i got out and realised i'd lost a few layers of nato green :)

There's a world of difference between a GS and an Ambi - the Ambi cab has an extra 2 foot of headroom.

Thats probably just answered a querey I had regards a black metal plate in Morph with the words "Med Cover Amb" on it in white lettering similar to a numberplate font but a tad smaller which looks as though it was designed to live on the grill.

Now any squaddie would no doubt recognise a military ambulance but in the Civvy world the "Med Cover Amb" notice would make it perfectly clear to anyone that the 101 was infact driven my a Medeteranian and when he/she was off the replacement had to be ambidexterous (sp?)...... h'mmm interesting!

More interestingly is that Morph who was a proto type ambi (one of two) was later fitted with antiburst locks...I guess a few of the crew must have been flung out in those unfortunate rolls hence the upgrade.

Mandy lost her 101 cherry this evening! I've only had the thing 14 months and she has never (no, never) been in it. But tonight, with the Discovery inexplicably full of axles, we needed to take two dogs to training. It was her Merc or my 101.

She's pretending she hated it, but suddenly everyone at dog training knows who we are. One bloke even came out of the woodwork as a Disco and S3 owner who once almost bought a 101 GS. His wife looked quite worried, come to think of it.

If this is the accident that I have previously read about, in Dulwich (or may have been Putney?) was it not the case that the 101 ambulance was later proven not to be at fault? Was it that the front passenger who may have been the 'young copper' being injured as a result of the front of the cab being impacted inwards, and the 'handle' on the dash ruptured his spleen? I may very well be wrong, and I don't have that document to hand, but tragic though it was, did the Coroner not state that it would not have happened if he's been wearing a seat belt? :-(

The coroner may have made the remark you quote but, as far as my failing memory serves me, none of the 109's that I was in ever had seat belts fitted so I'd think it unlikely that the 101's did either?? More likely Mr Coroner was playing to the press a tad??

Ah, Tim had them put in 'after' getting the 101 - an interesting and entertaining story with which we will ALL empathise, over to Tim :-)
