What size is my clutch pipe? (101/series)

The 101 uses a larger than standard bore pipe for the clutch hydraulics (as does my series from reservoir to master cyl). Does anybody have any idea what size it is so that i can buy some copper pipe to replace it? And what size/thread are the ends.

Pipe size is 1/4" O.D and I think the ends are 7/16" UNF

Thanks! That sounds about right.

Thinking back, i seem to recall getting a reducer adaptor for my 2A when i rebuilt it and using normal sized pipe. Would this be okay to do on the 101 also? If so - Richard do you sell the reducers?. The clutch master cyl already has an adaptor on it (not sure if it goes up or down a size)

I do - they go from large to small (male pipe fitting, male "end" on the reducer)

- Part No. 139082

Usually one or two in stock.

So the reducer is male at both ends? I'd have thought it would go

large Male - small female ?

My slave has a large female orifice (for want of a better description!), as does my master cyl.

There is the potential risk of slowing down clutch engagement as the fluid will have more resistance to flow back to the reservoir. That could be an encouragement to excessive clutch slip. As a short term solution you'll probably be OK but I'd suggest staying with 1/4" if you can.

am gonna try some plumbing and aircon suppliers tommorrow as i gather it is the same size as used for some of that kinda stuff!

Dougal uttered summat worrerz funny about:

In effect the Clutch is the same as that fitted to the early RRC so if they have the smaller Dia pipework there should be no problem.

I don't know the answer to the If bit though.

It's more a 'length of plumbing' issue than what's at the ends which, as you say, are effectively the same. The 101 pipe/hose run does appear longer (acknowledging that only part is being replaced). I can't remember what size the pipe was on the RRC.

For anyone who's vaguely interested, there is roughly twice the flow area in a 1/4" OD pipe as in a 3/16" OD pipe.

Sorry, confused everyone there! The bit the pipe goes in is female, the bit that goes in the m/c is male.

I'd be tempted to replace the whole thing to make lif easier.. though only one stretch really needs doing and that is from the master cyl to the first or second joint (one where it goes through the metalwork to get outside the cab and one on the x-member just below that.

Yes, I have a roll of 1/4 inch AC copper pipe

Don't forget if you change the whole thing to the 3/16" pipe and fittings you will also need to buy a flexible to suit. Better off keeping to the original as the clutch action will be slowed down, the adaptor is 7/16" UNF female one end and 3/8" UNF male the other.
