I'm looking for a 4wd with front and rear PTO. I've always like the old series landies and a friend mentioned he thought he had seen one with a rear PTO. so I thought I would ask the experts here in alt.fan.landrover.
preferably something in diesel. nothing high tech, no turbos, no computers, just something that can be kept running with a bit of oil, some fuel, a cabinate of tools and a welder.
does such a beast exist?

Yes but the only ones I'had anything to do with were Military ones. The rear PTO was used (amongst other things) driving a trailer. i.e. six wheel drive (articulated).

No - you're not a twit - you're correct!
The rear PTO (and link arms) was an idea carried over from the Series 1 Land Rover but rarely saw any use other than the trailer drive as stated above (it does make a nice gap to put a trailer 7 pin plug in though)
Front PTO is a very, very rare beast (akin to the hand throttle) and is not commonly found alive these days

correct. the front PTO is actually quite often used for, believe it or not, PTO winches. i think the rear one is mainly used for commercial purposes. i think a lot of series fire-engines used the rear PTO to power a water pump. in the beginning (series 1 era) landrover put a lot of effort into designing PTO devices such as welders, agricultural spraying machines, circular saws and the like (June edition of "landrover world" has a large article about PTO development) but they never really took off. although from all this development, landrovers earnt their reputation for being a "do anything" workhorse which has helped the product name immensely.
