Worrying knocking in the engine

1988 RR fitted with a 4.6 full engine by RPi.

Engine has covered 42,000 miles since it was installed brand new and I have a very worrying metallic knocking sound which appears to be eminating from the plenum chamber. If you touch the plenum chamber you can feel the knocking, my best description of the sound is that of a tappet completely gone but the engine is running absolutely fine.

Its the kind of sound you get when the water pump bearings are giving up (which it isn't - that's also new).

The fuel injection system is the flapper type so think of this as the 3.5Efi with just a bigger bore engine.

Any ideas people, I'm a bit worried about this one and I'm tempted not to run it till I get it looked at.

I may be way off beam here, but ... A mate with a RR (RR2, 4.0HSE I think) had a similar sound, which he and the local garage swore was a lot of things, but definitely tragic and likely to cost mucho denaro. It turned out to be the Torque Converter. Apparently bolts on a plate or cover can come undone and cause a knocking type sound. Saved him a lot of money, which he was trying to raise for a new engine .. might be worth getting a competent LR garage to look at it .. ;)

That's definately worth following up - had a customer recently with a similar senario.

Mine was doing this too...turned out to be a loose plug wire....!

Exactly the same with my 4.6 - garage said it had thrown a conrod, in fact it was the drive plate on the torque converter which had started to fragment. Symptoms were slightly different as the engine management tried to wade in and sort things out, but exactly as Paul says. Not sure whether it's the same as Alan's problem though. I'd give RPi a call, they're pretty helpful.

Heheheh, now that _is_ a cheap fix, and one I would feel quite competent to accomplish ... er ... perhaps ...

Thanks all for your suggestions, I always find it better to ask on here before I fear the worst. With engine though a horrible metal on metal clatter usually is the sign of something expensive.

Bear in mind this is an old Range Rover at what part of the transmission should I be looking toward?...or is it an internal thing?

Fortunately the guy that does all the mechanical work on my car is a friend so it's not as if I'm going into an unknown garage, the thing is He specialises in performance cars and american cars so He doesn't know all the little quirks of Land Rover products. He does have some quite interesting cars there when I go in though....like the supercharged Mustang that was in last week....now that sounded nice....:-)

Muddy, might also be worth checking the obvious, had a similar noise from a

4.0 P38A, turned out 2 of the intake trumpets were loose in the manifold. Badger.

listen to engine. is the knock at engine speed, same as revs, or is it half engine speed.

if half speed its a camshaft lobe maybe worn [common on rovers ]

it could be a hydraulic lifter not pumping up properly, ie because its got debris blocking its oilways .

lifter or cam will be slower than engine revs so this will be a rat tat tat as you drive and go thru gears .

if its at engine revs then could be a rod bearing gone .

normally any bearings that go will be louder when engine is cold and clearances are wider in engine components .

The ticking is not at full engine revs it's certainly slower than that, so the cam explanation seems feasible.

The noise doesn't seem to get any quieter as the engine warms up, infact you can only hear it if you open the bonnet, I only noticed it originally when I pulled into a garage to fill the washer bottle and left the engine running whilst I did so.

Anyhow, I'll take the car in to get it looked at on Monday by an engine builder friend and I'll not use this weekend just in case.

I'll post the findings for future reference.

I have my fingers crossed it's something like that, I'll trust what my friend finds on Monday and post the results
