Yay for the MOT man!

Disco (M reg V8i) just been in for it's annual check up. Failed on rear brake pipes, which i half expected it to. Got an advisory on the ball joint on the A frame as well. I've been meaning to do this but never got round to it. Any hints or tips for this job??. I seem to remember a big press is needed for such a job. Brake pipes being done after easter, i may as well do the ball joint whilst my mate does the pipes!.

Hi Dom

Er, it might be easier for you to swop the jobs. When my bloke-wot-spannners did the A frame ball joint on the blue RR he described it as involving putting the relevant parts in his biggest press (20 tonne IIRC), setting it doing whatever hydraulic presses do and hiding next door! The noise of the joint going home is awesome!

Good news on the almost-pass tho'

Now you are not going to believe the next bit: spent last Saturday looking at Sarre and various bits around St Margarets Bay with Bob C.

150 miles of 'spirited' driving in the green RR - result 21 mpg! I doooon't believe it either. The best I ever managed in the blue one was 18 mpg.

It's not that bad. I managed to do mine with a suitable drift, (stout tube IIRC) _big_ vice and a short shaft sledge hammer. If however you're not used to 'dock yard' engineering then I'd suggest you find yourself a press.

BTW, mine was well knackered and replacement just about stopped all the clunking in the drivetrain. That was especially good news because AIUI the clunking could have been due to spline wear in the gearbox. [1]

Blimey, first of all you come over all polite, and now you're seeing hot men! You'll be buying yourself a Suzuki Vitara next...

The end off a Series axle tube makes a very good tool for pressing in. Make sure hole is burr-free, and keep the bolt holes lined up. A big vice with plenty of grease should do the job ok.

Many thanks for your replys chaps.....

I've got access to a big ish press, so hopefully this wont be a problem. I'll give the 'dockyard engineering' style a go though!.

21mpg with 'spirted' driving, thats good. I was chuffed when i got 15.3mpg out of mine towing a canoe trailer and police water bowser up/ down Welsh hills!.
