2001 IS300 Oil Filter Change

Just purchased a used IS300 with 88K miles. Nice condition, but I like to do all my own maintenance. I was unable to get the oil filter off, it was completely unaccessable from both the top and bottom of the vehicle, even after removing the covers from the underside of the vehicle. Does Lexus use a special tool for this job? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks! :(

It should be reacheable from the engine bay on the driver's side. My Supra has the same engine and that's how I have to access it. It should be right under your intake plenum.

I heard changing the oil on the is300 is a pain in the ass. At least thats what some guy who used to work at an oil changing place told me.

Granted. It is difficult. But, that's the way it has to be done.

Just did the oil filter on my IS300, just reach in from the driver side and turn that bitch with all your might. It will give.

"> I have tried to remove the filter from the engine bay. Yes, the

The dip stick tube for the transmission is in the way according to the folks over on IS300.net and they advise unbolting the top anchor and moving it slightly out of the way to allow access. Mine's a manual so there's not dip stick tube to contend with. It's still pretty tight in there though.

I have just done my IS 300 oil and filter change, after reading some of the forums. My most recent service was done at dealership on a

15K miles service, it cost me about $400 and most of the services don?t even apply to my car (eg. such as automatic transmission fluid change on my manual 5 speed). So to do things right, I though it?s time for me to do it myself.

Anyways as for the dealer?s Toyota oil filter that was in my IS 300, I can?t find an oil wrench that would fit on the end. I tried many different auto shops, and from my costly Lexus IS 300 service manual from the dealer, it calls out for a special tool. Before I reserved to using the last resort, the screwdriver method, I found that if you used an oil filter end-fitting wrench that tightens it works. Use a short wrench with a lever of 8-10inches and getting to it from the front driver side seems to work. Once it?s off I used an after marker Bosch oil filter and replace the dealer?s (non-syntheic) "cheaper" oil with 100% synthetic oil. Note: when you purchase your aftermarket oil filter at the auto store, at the same time find the oil filter end fitting socket for you oil filter it'll make your next oil change that much easier. Good Luck!
