TRAC lite

aal group Some months ago I posted a note regarding a continuous TRAC lite which the dealer was unable to correct. I spent quite a lot of money to replace two components of the system without effect. As a result I let the lite remain on without any apparent reduction of performance. When I recently got a check engine lite I took the car (92 LS400

105000 miles) to a local toyota/lexus shop and asked them to see if they could find the TRAC lite problem in addition to the check engine lite problem. They did find it after many hours of searching. It was a dirty connector in the wiring harness. It took a long time to find the problem and it wasn't a bad component. The check engine lite was due to one bad oxygen sensor which was indeed bad. The bottom line is I don't think I will ever go back to the dealer for service. They seem to have incompetent help who apparently are intent on troubleshooting by changing out parts (like we used to troubleshoot our TV sets in the past) and maximizing the sale of high priced parts. Well anyway I thought it might be of interest to some of you to see how the problem was finally solved. snipped-for-privacy@lycos.com

Unfortunately, that is the common mode of operation throughout the auto repair industry ... it just hits you harder because of the high cost of Lexus Parts. If you can find a private shop specializing in servicing Lexus (i.e., an EXPERIENCED Lexus mechanic that opens his own shop), you are going to do better in most cases. Actually, the first generation (90-92) have been around long enough, that more common issues should be able to be handled by most any competent shop. The trouble is that Lexus specific systems (i.e., the Trac system) may only be able to be serviced by those well versed (or NOT in some cases) with the system. That said, the 90-92 LS400 was probably the most "reliable" car ever built... that is NOT to imply that they don't need to be maintained.
