re check engine lite and trac off lite

99 Camry v-6 Japanese built 98000 km and up to now never a problem

The check engine lite came on --tried the gas cap trick to no avail. Called a dealership --customer servicesaid -- no problem just keep driving -- a few miles later the trac off lite comes on yet traction control is working (tested it on wet pavement). Called the dealership got some mumbo jumbo about valves and relays or something like that.

I have parked the car till tomorrow and will take it in. Getting vaseline prepared as we speak. I hate going to dealerships but dont know what else to do now.

Any of you gurus got a simple fix or explanation? Just how safe is it to be driving. I guess I could always tape over the lights -- actually my boss did that too one of his vehicles - a strange way to fix a problem.

Don't worry about it too much, get the codes run on it. The trac off light goes on whenever the chk eng lite goes on. There's a little bit of a delay. It happened to me. Just a stupid 30$ sensor. If the trac off light is on, your trac does not work. YOu probably felt the ABS kick in.
