406 coupe tapping

Hi all,

I have a pug 406 coupe 2L with 65k on, I have started noticing a tapping or metalic clanking during acceleration which matches the revs of the engine. It is worse with more load on the engine

When the car is cold it runs purrrfect, this in my opinion rules out a tappit problem, I have replaced the entire exhaust except the manifold as advised by a pug garage, thanks for the expence but its no improvement.

If I drive at 50-60 then its fine but as soon as I get the motor really warm it starts tapping under load. The noise is not very audible with the windows closed but is very very clear when driving next to a wall or sound barier.

I need some opinions before I get anyone else to look at it, and unfortunatly its getting worse slowly.

Thanks in advance

Dan

peugeot406coupe (u23758@uwe) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

It's the 2.0i 16v?

Not quite the same engine, but I know the Turbo version of the 8v suffers from blowing exhaust manifold gaskets which have EXACTLY those symptoms - the root prob is that the studs are a bit wimpy and stretch. Manifold off, clean it all up, replace studs (perhaps even upgrade them), reassemble.

Does it sound like a bag of marbles rattling if you boot it at lowish speeds in 4th or 5th gear ??

If so, sounds like pinking, used to be and still will be a timing problem, but you can no longer adjust the timing, it's all done by witchcraft.

If this is the case then it will be a sensor, your Peugot dealer or a specialist will piont you the the correct one.

Just as an afterthought, do you use standard unleaded or super-duper ???

My old 1999 Xantia 16 valve used to pink a little on std unleaded, but was fine on the super duper stuff. I could allways tell if er indoors had filled it, as a woman will allways go to the cheapest, (thats why she got me)

Thanks both,

Someone else sugested the manifold gasket so I may look into this one.

I've been through the timing possabilities, tried using better 97ron fuel, adding a octane booster to the fuel. I've also added some injector cleaner in the hope it may be just some carbon but nothing made any difference.
