This only confirms your very limited experience of modern 4x4's. Limited probably to early model Discovery generation models which didn't even have anti-role bars or similar. The tendency is for the newer models to have the flattest cornering. My X5 cornered at high speed completely level. So do last model Discovery fitted with ACE suspension. Even my old Isuzu is fairly good. Ditto Nissan Terrano which is a surprisingly capable and ever popular budget unit. No passenger ever mentions body roll in any of these although they are not X5 flat. But then, I don't race them because they are not racing cars.
I did once own an early Discovery which did roll like a toy boat in a gale
- All it needed was a front anti-roll bar to tame it. Later models had anti-roll bars factory fitted at both ends. Their geometry allowed a very stiff initial movement but once a certain articulation point was reached the resistance of the bars did not increase and thus allowed full articulation when needed. Disco II had the superb ACE fitted, if only as an option on base models.
