A quick Polo brake drum question?

I've got the nephew bringing his old 1988 Polo 1050cc for me to check the brakes over. I just wanted to know in advance if the rear drums on these cars are straight forward removal or does the hub nut also need removing? Thanks.

IIRC it's pretty much the same as for other VWs of that age; prise off dustcap, pull out split pin and lift off the castellated locking washer (-it's a bit like a crown cork beer bottle top!). Undo the big nut and remove the thrust washer. The drum comes off with the bearings inside . Good idea to have a new grease seal for when you replace it. You may as well replace the outer bearing when you re-assemble the hub, or at least clean and inspect the old one and then re-pack it with grease. When you have done with the brakes, put it all back together. Do up the nut until you can just move the thrust washer by pushing it sideways with a screwdriver. Use a new split pin when putting back together. Some new grease in the dust cap and it's done. Shouldn't take too long.

Thanks for that, t'was just as you said. Do you know if the bleed screw uses a special spanner to undo? It looks square shape rather than a standard nut shape. I have an old square spanner from the days of manual brake shoe adjusters but it won't fit over the end of the bleed nipple. I'd rather wait till I get the right fitting spanner than round it off with a bodge job.

ISTR it is a normal 8mm one.

It looks like its already been rounded! A new cylinder should only be a few squid and judging by the state of the original I doubt it would survive a turn without snapping off anyway.
