Can you use early 5 wide lug brake drums on a '69 Bug? Thanks.

Yes. For the front use 66-67' drums just be sure to use the 68'-up inner bearings and seals. In the rear you can use the early drum if you use a wider spacer, allthough I don't reccomend it. Theres not as much width in the drum as compared to a later

4 bolt so braking surface is decreased. I tried it and scratched the idea before it even got off the jackstands. Another option (and its a direct bolt-on) is to use drums made for a "thing" type 181. Plenty of brake surface but the problem with these is they are much wider than a type 1 so fender clearance could be a problem. I use them on my Baja with no problems. And yet another option is the 65' and earlier type 3. These have to be used with their backing plates and guts (I think any year on that stuff but the drums have to be of that vintage for the wide 5), but you get bigger brakes. If all else fails, I would imagine that someone like So cal probably can drill blank drums in the wide five pattern.
