Advice Carlton 1998cc Timing Belt Procedure ?

My father in law is changing the timing belt on his Carlton 1998cc automatic(G Reg, 1989). The Haynes manual suggests removing the starter motor, and holding the flywheel/driveplate stationary using a wide bladed screwdriver in the starter ring gear teeth. He wants to know if this is strictly necessary ? Could he get away without doing it ?

You would think the parking gear would lock up the flywheel adequately? If the parking gear will hold the car on a steep hill then it should be able to handle the forces necessary to remove the pulley nut. The nut is large so you will need to use a length of pipe over the wrench handle. Make sure the car is adequately supported on jack stands.

Yes, if he has an impact wrench to undo the bolt on the crank pulley.

?The park position locks the gearbox output shaft, not the engine.

IIRC you don't undo the centre nut on the crank pulley, but the four bolts around the edge.

I am reasonably certain there is no need to remove the starter and use a lever on the ring gear.

No need to remove the starter. To remove the crank pulley, it is only necessary to remove the four allen bolts that hold the pulley to the crankshaft sprocket. You may need to hold the centre bolt whilst undoing the allen bolts, as sometimes they can be a bit tight.

In theory yes, but there is a certain component called a torque converter that prevents this happening! There is no solid mechanical connection between the engine and the gearbox. The parking lock operates on the output side of the gearbox. The input side would still turn freely. Only under certain circumstances and on certain cars do the torque converters lock up under ECU control (over 50 mph in the case of a Carlton).

No. You don't even need to remove the crankshaft pulley at all. The belt will fit through the gap with a bit of wriggling. The water pump is the real bastard to rotate though! JB
