Aftermarket power steering?

Good morning URCM people,

I was wondering if there are any companies that fit power steering to cars that didn't have it originally?

The car is a 1999(S) Fiat Punto 60S, and I know that power steering was an option on the car when new, but I'm guessing that it was a "build-time" option.

The other option is to trade in the car for one which has PS, which I reckon would cost me at least £1000, so I would *consider* any cost up to that, mainly because every time I buy a different car it always seems to have a few problems which need sorting out, and at least with the car I have I know what the problems are...

Thanks in advance, Al Reynolds

The other option is to go to a gym!

But you can start by just ringing round your local garages. Any decent one can do it with bits off a scrapper, whether or not it would be economic is another question

Is it really as simple as fitting the right bits? I had assumed that the changeover would require some quite specialist work. I use a good independent Fiat specialist for servicing so I think I'll give him a ring.

Thanks for your help, Al

PS Although I would undoubtedly benefit from going to the gym, it is my wife who mostly drives the car, and I'm going to leave it to someone else to suggest that she goes to the gym ;-}

Essentially yes, there's quite a few bits but nothing particularly complex.

Power steering pump, aux drive belt, power steering reservoir, steering rack and a bit of plumbing at the very least.

No, most late fiats use a power steering column, electrically driven.

Would that include my Mk1 Punto (late but still Mk1)? Al

I am not that familiar with the exact year models but I know that for the last few years they have been electric. Introduced in late 2000 made by Delphi.

Also, just out of interest, these people make aftermarket kits that could fit anything:

Its easier and cheaper to get a new ( to you) car with PAS

Retro fit the E steer system from a slightly newer Punto. It's electric so no messy fluids. The loom may already be designed for it. Should just bolt in and it'll cost you less than a ton from the scrappers. Although there may be more to it than this simplistic view.
