Any ideas please

Vauxhall Astra 1.9 D 1995.

Wiper fuse blowing intermittently, ie works fine for a while then suddenly blows fuse. Replace fuse 2 or 3 times and blows straight away. Replace fuse with a lower rated one, cos I'd run out of correct ones, works fine for a while then whole cycle starts again.

TIA

No simple answer to this one. Something is overloading the fuse - probably a short somewhere. Could be a chafed wire rubbing on the body, or anywhere. The motor may be partially shot, causing it to draw too heavy a current. Intermittent problems are difficult. Trace the wire and see if it's chafed somewhere. Or possibly a wire is coming out of a terminal and making occasional contact with the body or another wire. If you can't find anything, rewire the circuit, even if it's only in a jury-rig manner and try it and see. But be safe!

Firstly, try not to use HTML for posting....

I had the exact same problem on a cavalier mk3, the wipers are on the same fuse as the horn! - The horn wires chaff as they pass through the lower valance at the front of the car and short out. This may be the case with the Astra

The easy way to find an intermittent short, without blowing loads of fuses.........

remove the fuse, and wire a lamp across the 2 fuse terminals. With the circuit turned off, then lamp should be off. When the circuit is switched on, the lamp will light, but not at full brightness, and wipers should work, but slowly. mess about with the wires, until the wipers stop, and the bulb goes bright, then you will be somewhere close to the short, and it should be fairly simple to pinpoint by determining which bit of wire makes the light go bright

(its far easier to do than to explain!)

Brilliant idea!

-try lubricating the wiper spindles and linkages; if they have become stiff it puts a heavier load on the motor and so it draws extra current.

Have a look at your wiring diagram - does the same fuse protect the wiper and something else e.g. a light, which could be the actual cause of the problem?
