astra diesel non start

after a recent short trip ,my astra 2.0 tdi decided it would not start, in fact there was no tickover at all . I called my recovery service,Green flag , who were no help at all exept for the push i got for a bump start. anyhow back to my problem the ignition lights come on, but the yellow glow plug light in the centre stays off, this has always come on in the past . is this an indication of another fault maybee a blow fuse of something . the starter motor was working perfectly when i parked .But now it seems there is no current to it. i can bump start the car so no problems with glow plugs, and the fuse guide says nothing exept some fuses will cause serious ignition problems refer to vauxhall dealer. can anyone help thanks

If it bump starts fine, then it's most likely a starter motor problem. Could be the starter motor, ignition switch, bad connection, or broken wire (I can't remember if these have a relay or not, but that's another possibility).

And from what I remember of these cars, the glow plug light only comes on when the engine is quite cold (think it's 4deg or so). These engines don't really need the glow plugs to start, as they're direct injection, so failed glow plugs would make very little difference to starting except in really cold conditions.

You can check the starter if you can get to the terminals on the starter solenoid. Just bridge across from the main terminal from the battery to the small one from the ign switch. This should run the motor. If it does then you have a problem in the switch wiring, if it doesn't, then the motor is duff. Do you have an immobiliser on this model, as that is a more likely cause. The system is not picking up the transponder in the key. If you have a spare key, try that.

If the immobiliser was retarding the starter, it would be signified by flashing MIL.

OK, to be more serious. Did you hear a clunk when you tried to start it, or was there no sound at all. A clunk would suggest that the solenoid is operating but the starter is not. No sound would suggest that there is no power getting to the solenoid via the ignition switch, or that the battery has just died, or perhaps that one of the batter terminals has a poor connection.
