Hi, i just bought a new 08 Astra with 1300 miles on the clock. The service book has no service history in it yet but i wondered when it needs its first minor service. Its the first car i've owned this young and i know at one time the first oil change was at a low mileage. Is this still the case and should i be booking it in at a dealer to keep the warranty valid?

I think you'd be wise to check with your nearest Vauxhall dealer. Normally they are 10,000 mile / 1 year service intervals, but I'm not sure if yours should have had a 500 mile service. If in doubt, get one done; it'll do no harm other than cost a bit of money for peace of mind.
What does it say in the book?
Nearly all cars these days only require their first service at 10-12,000 miles or 1 year. Having an earlier service is not a good thing.
This is a link to the service intervals on Vauxhall's website. The Astra is certainly no less than 1 year/20,000 miles after 2006.

Really? Why (apart from apparently needless cost)?
The initial fill of oil will be of a type that promotes the run in procedure? Changing it means that bits do not bed in as they should, this leads to excessive oil consumption further down the line. I can't remember where I read this but it made sense at the time.
