I?ve just been told the steering rack has failed on my MK4 54 plate Astra 16v SXI (2 months outside warranty)
Has anyone ever heard of this before?
It?s only done 23K miles (with full service history)

yep, belive it or not its very common & surprise surprise vauxhall supply it as a kit.
I know vauxhall supply that as a kit, is it a known design fault ????

Have you asked for a contribution from Vauxhall?
I would have thought you have a reasonable chance providing it has a proper Vauxhall service history.
Does your car have a 2 year service interval? If so, it will only have had one service but that would be fine.
