If this is the CVT type box, then there are known issues with it. I would speak to your dealer.

Does anybody still use CVT boxes?

I would of thought this would of been a ASM (or whatever Audi call them), in which case those symptoms may just be a charcteristic of the gearbox (clutch not being disengaged quite quick enough when slowing, and a bit of delay while the box selects gear and engages the clutch again). But best option is a dealer. There may be a software update available to improve things, but certainly I wouldn't be worrying too much.

is the fluid level correct? and the idle speed?

Yep. Audi calls it Stepronic (or was it multitronic?) Anyway, one of the Audi autoboxes was an electronically controlled CVT with paddle-shift controls that let you select from a range of ratios (7 IIRC). It pre-existed the DSG box. Rover used one on the MGF fairly recently too.

Anyhow to the OP- speak with your dealer ASAP, they should know about its issues, sometimes it can be cured with a fluid flush, and software upgrade, but if not, you are looking at a recon / new box. Given the car is 3 yrs old or thereabouts, I would have expected Audi to offer some goodwill payment. Thats if your service record is upto scratch.

Both manual boxes and normal automatics allow you to do that, too, y'know.

It struck me as an odd idea- a CVT with stepped control.
