Basic stainless exhaust..

I need a new exhaust soon, pretty much the whole system at once.

Is there a way of buying and fitting a stainless system myself for about the same price as getting a 3 year life rustomatic system fitted by monkeys?

The car in question is a 1996 Mondeo, so this will probably be it's last exhaust (if stainless) or last but one (in mild steel), so is it worth it?

And where can you get an OEM spec (or a 'nicer' noise version, but not much louder) stainless exhaust? Most of the web is full of go faster, drown 'em out, spec exhausts with 4" twin tailpipes :-(

Personally, I wouldn't bother with stainless, unless you're going to keep the car for ages.

I also wouldn't try fitting one myself. I've been there and done that a couple of times. All I got was dirty, cut, bruised and sore. It's no fun scrambling about under a car trying to undo rusted solid bolts and usually not having tools up to the jobs. (An air chisel and rattle gun are recommended).

You could do what I generally do these days and order an OEM spec Timax / Bosal system on the 'net and pop it down to your friendly neighbourhood back street garage where they'll usually charge around an hour's labour to do the job. (Make sure you order the 'fitting kit' / all the rubbers / brackets at the same time, though).

You'll be surprised at how cheap an exhuaust system is without the Thick Fuck tax.

I think you're out of luck as the market is catering for the go faster brigade.

Yep. (and no help to you but ..)

When we built the kitcar some 17+ years ago I first fitted the Rickman stainless offering and that stayed on there about two weeks (too loud, for me anyway).

I was then able to source what you are looking for now in the form of a 'std' Grundy stainless replacement system (for MkII Escort though), lopped 6" out of the length and it's still on there now. ;-)

It really can't be *that* much more expensive to make a std system out of stainless but that wouldn't be good for profits would it?

All the best ..

Get on ebay and type in CYBOX, it is the ebay name that Peco uses. They have a shop in Wallasey, Wirral that fits the exhausts for people that can't fit them or wit about for orders. Be sure to get the central silencer if you want a quieter one.

They specialise in stainless systems for classics and unusual stuff, but they'll build *anything* you want. If you've got a pattern system, they'll copy it. If you require something one-off they'll build and fit for the car.

I have a local specialist who will make - on the premises - anything you want. The cost isn't as high as you might imagine since all these low volume systems are effectively hand made, and going direct cuts out the middle man and retailer.

But Battersea might not be convenient for you...

Ooooo 'stainless' ;-)

Your 'one off build' thing reminded me of when I drove my V6 Ford power Bedford CF camper into KF and asked them for an exhaust system ..

It caused neatly as much confusion as when I asked them to measure the tracking of the rear wheels of the MkII Escort based kit car (because the missus clipped a Daimler with it and I guessed the rear axle tube was bent).

They 'couldn't do it' so I asked if I could borrow their kit and did it myself.

2.75 deg toe in .. ;-(

All the best ..

It is, too.

They did a system for our '60s 2cv van - When I took it out of the box, I didn't want to fit it - just hang it on the wall...

Their "pattern room" is worth the tour, too - thousands of OE systems for damn near anything on the road hanging up.

I thought I was losing my marbles. I typed in CYBOX and ebay insists I'm thick and substitutes CYBOT. I typed it in twice before I realised.#

I must still be thick, what did you realise?

FWIW, this is the direct link

Would you mind me asking the name of the company?

Don't know since cars vary so much. Obviously more than a mass produced cheapie. Maybe close to a full price maker's spare part.
