Stainless Exhausts

Why oh why isn't there a law, forcing car manufacturers to fit stainless steel exhausts?

Yesterday, I had a stainless steel exhaust, custom built for my 03 Daihatsu van, cost £300, working out £20 cheaper than exhaust centre could offer a bog standard steel one.

When I picked the van up from the custom exhaust centre, I looked at the pile of rotting boxes and pipes sitting in a skip and wondered, what on earth this is doing for the environment.. Quite frankly, it's a disgrace, manufacturers get away with selling cars, that require exhausts replacing every 3 or 4 years.

Anyway, what do the exhaust manufactures use for material these days...Papier-mâché or something?

Any thoughts?

Your Worst Nightmare ("Your Worst Nightmare" ) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

Over £300 for a mild exhaust for a tiny mid-rear engined van? That's extortion.

OE quality exhausts last far longer than that - it's just the cheap crap the K-F etc sell which dies quickly. Anyway, stainless exhausts don't last forever - they can fatigue and crack, the silencer wadding gets blown out.

um, I guess they return themselves to the earth at some stage, but I get your point.

It sounds like a fair point to me, but I don't know all the pros and cons.

Best wishes all, Dave.

Putting on stainless exhausts would most likely make the car suddenly completely uncompetitive price wise as they would have to raise the price of each car by a few quid. I'm quite sure that is the view of most car company accounts departments.

It's been my experience that the exhaust fitted to new cars lasts nearer to five years. How many buyers of new cars keep them for longer than that?

Yup, we're at the mercy of the bean counters, even if it works out loads cheaper and better for the environment in the long term.

It only works out better for the environment if you can be taxed while doing it.

Replaced the exhaust on a Dec 03 Matiz, 6 months ago. The box was stainless, however, the pipe were it broke, wasn't!

How stupid is that?

The most important thing for the bean-counters is the purchase price and the running/maintenance costs for the first 3 years. Get these low enough and they'll sell by the fleet-load, and bollox to anyone who runs a 3 year or older car.

IME OE exhausts seem to manage 8 or more years.

My 5 year old passat has an exhaust on it that is in great condition. I know it`s the original one fitted, and there is years of life left in it.

Have you seen inside it?

But as the OP says, if it were law, they'd *all* have to do it and they'd all be just as competitive as before - apart from those already doing it of course.

And do you REALLY want yet more legislation? REALLY?

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate Your Worst Nightmare, managed to produce the following words of wisdom

Mazda used to put full stainless systems on the MX5.

Can't think of anyone else who does / did though.

Sensible legislation, like I've suggested... Why not? tox

The exhausts on all the S70 and V70's I've owned and still own are all original, the one on the current car is 11yrs old...

Nope, but I do know that putting your hand over the end of it and revving the engine just produces a lot of pressure, blowing the hand out the way. There`s a rattle underneath the car, and the garage was trying to figure out what it was. It`s certainly not the exhaust :-)
