Battery - loss of water

Hi Left a battery in the garage for a couple of months. When checked, I had to top up all the cells with about a pint of water. No sign of battery case cracked and although it took a few days to charge up properly, the hydrometer reading is now ok.

Never had this before with a car battery in the car or outside it for that matter

Any ideas - screw tops were on firmly and weather was far from hot.

Hi John,

Most water is lost during the absorption phase of charging, so the obvious question is did you have the battery on some type of charger? If so, the charging voltage is excessive for "float" or "maintenance" charging of the battery.

For more information on charging and chargers, please see Section 9 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQ on
