Best place to get head gasket done

H all, i have a derv 1997 Sharan with a oiled up cooling system, i suspect the HG has gone. VW stealership will charge an absolute fortune to fix it, where is the best place to look for someone to fix it other than a dealership? I am in the Lichfield/ Tamworth/ Uttoxeter/ Burton/ Derby area of Staffordshire.

Ta!

Cant suggest anywhere specific but you want to go on good word of mouth for a local garage, or German specialist. There are lots of VAG TDI's about and they're not vastly complicated, although its comparitivly rare for the HG to go- they do crack the heads more frequently so this could be your problem.

DO NOT just replace the HG and expect it to be that, unless its obviously blown- have an independant enginneering firm lightly skim, and pressure test, (X ray is better but more expensive) it for leaks.

Check the oil cooler isnt the root of your problems first though!!!

Yes indeed. If there's no oil in the coolant and it still runs and pulls absolutely fine then it could well be. I won't bore you lot with the story of my TD Fiesta yet again, but if anyone does feel deprived, google should dredge it up.

There is used oil ie black oil in the coolant. Runs absolutly fine, just got us back from a 150 mile round trip. how does one tell if the oil cooler is to blame?

Only way AFAIK is to take it off and physically look at it (or get someone else to!). I think what happens is they tend to crack across the ports, causing the oil and water to mix. If your coolant is still quite liquid, with just the beginnings of oil getting in, then STOP now and don't run it again until you've probably caught it early enough. If it's thick sludge, then it's a bit later, but still not too late, but it'll just be a bit more of a pain to properly clear out the coolant system.
