I have a tom tom xl classic which is connected to the the cig lighter socket with a trialing wire as I have my sat nav to the right of the steering wheel. It has a poor battery life this unit about about only 2.5 hours So I have to keep it on charge whilst in use.
Is there is a way to have a neater more permanent type solution instead of a trailing wire over the steering wheel to the sat nav.

So it only charges when the door's open :)
My mate said to try one of those in line 12v things connected up to the relay board (mk4 golf) so all localised and not looking messy.
Might add, no idea what one is when its at home or how it connects but perhaps something to find out another evening lol .. when my eyes are not shutting.
you have to open the door to let the clutch out in any case.
And to let it back in when it's done what it has to do.
Any reason why you can't have it in the centre of the dash (presumably nearer the cig lighter socket) mounted on one of these bean bag mounts?
Every interior light I've ever fiddled with has three electrical connections available:
+12v at all times (to one end of the bulb filament)-ve at all times (a simple connection to chassis)
the lead that goes to the door switches, where the switches provide the -ve connection but only when the door is open.

I noticed more people have it in the middle, but I just can't seem to get on with it there, feels like its in the way and blocking my vision and just irritating the eye line, tucked on the right seems fine, especially for a quick glance.
much depends on the dashboad and mount that you have. all the ones I have tried, the mount sticks a fair way away from the screen, so the GPS is below the view out. I prefer the GPS in the middle purely for the convenience of having the passenger keep an eye on it when you get up to complicated bits where you you need voice and visual instructions, plus interpretation !! Like when you drive through central London and you need many sets of eyes to avoid all the hazards.
You need more than eyes whilst driving in central London more in terms of devine intervention :) tis a total nightmare the last time I attempted it, now I take my chances on the tubes and buses. If I was a better driver I would drive, I just found it beyond daunting and confusing with all the restrictions, ones ways, and what have you's I was at the point of dumping the car and walking home crying.
I used to drive coaches round London all day, and I *never* took my car in except in dire straits, and then outside the rush hour from choice.
