boot lock

i had my boot lock broken recently and altho i have a replacement lock assembly i have no key..got it from a car breakers...he said if you pull the lock apart in the unlocked position then the pips that stand proud should be removed. he reckons that will do it..can anyone confirm this..regards..baz

you can remove the " pips " , i have in the past just filed them off, but doing this means any key will be able to open the lock.

Well yes, but it will be less secure. It also depends on the car; most modern locks are pretty difficult to separate at all, but older locks, like the ones on Minis, were designed to open up - you could find the key number stamped on the back of the barrel. Usually it was just a case of removing a circlip with the key in the lock.
